Maayan Koschitzky, winemaker at On Q behind the Cadence Cabernet Sauvignon, brings his cult winemaking expertise from Screaming Eagle, Dalla Valle and Atelier Melka, three of the most celebrated wine estates in the Napa Valley.

Koschitzky is not your typical winemaker. He has a background as an engineer. Coming from a family of farmers, his native instinct to grow grapes combined with the ability to use technology to its full advantage, gives him an edge that not many winemakers can boast.

The “Cadence” displays an entirely opaque, dark purple-black core with hints of magenta on the rim. The nose is enticing and powerful, showing off intoxicating liqueur notes of créme de cassis and kirsch, alongside ripe black cherry, blackberries, fresh-picked violets, cacao, baking spices, vanilla and coffee bean, tobacco leaf, and crushed stones. The palate is full-bodied and mouth-coating with immense layers of dark fruit that are unabashedly rich and ripe. All this, however, is proportionately balanced by waves of persisting freshness and a touch of acidity that keeps it from entering a sappy/cloying territory that many “Cult Cabs” can’t seem to shake.

Deep, almost dark as night, yet luminescent ruby in the glass, with intimately appealing inky violet highlights. A drop-dead gorgeous nose emerges as it breathes, dark red and purple fruits, spice, smoke, lavender all jump from the glass. Sip after sip, it reveals a sexy, nuanced and utterly stunning side, with an expressive, seamless mouthfeel and polished tannins. A majestic, textured, creamy finish rounds out this exuberant Cabernet combining richness with grace.

Critics Reviews For On Q

Full and rich, this behemoth is densely packed, with firm, grainy tannins and a very lone, spicy finish. 96 points

Appassionata Cabernet

Opens with cedar and vanilla pod notes over a core of creme de cassis, baked plums and dried mulberries with touches of spice cake, menthol, licorice and chocolate box. The oak stands out slightly at this stage on the full-bodies palate, with a firm, grainy frame and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy.

Wine Advocate (2013) 93 Points

Appassionata Cabernet

It offers a big step up in quality with its beautiful bouquet of creme de cassis, crushed violets, graphite, and charcoal-like aromas and flavors. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, silky wine that has light, finesse-driven tannins, terrific balance, and a great finish.

Appassionata Cabernet

This inky colored beauty boasts terrific notes of blackberries, currants, charcoal, graphite, and lead pencil shavings. With full-bodied richness, beautiful concentration, plenty of ripe tannins, and a savory, classic style, it has the polish and texture to drink nicely today but is going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and should cruise for two decades or more. It’s a beautiful wine from winemaker Maayan Koschitzky.

Appassionata Cabernet

Appassionata has an even inkier blue/purple color and stunning nose of blackberries, blueberries, graphite and spring flowers. It is much more youthful and less evolved compared to the 2012, but even more concentrated and delineated. This is a sensational effort, but again, production is extremely small. Ideally, this begs for several years of bottle age, but is should evolve and drink well for 20-25 years.

Robert Parker (2013) 95 Points

Appassionata Cabernet

This Cabernet Sauvignon-based Bordeaux style blend is highly perfumed and exotic with notes of lily, lilac, red rose, sandalwood, cedar chest, cigar box, cinnamon, black currant, black raisin, and sun-dried tomato. Initially very smooth and supple, astringent grape (from the Cabernet grape’s skin) and oak (from new French oak barrels) tannins kick in for a big, meaty, chewy finish. This very recently released wine will age gracefully for several years, but if you can’t wait, decant an hour or two before serving, and pair with braised or grilled meats or game.
